MARY OBDAM

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we mourn the loss of our Mom and Oma. Mary Obdam passed away peacefully on June 18th 2024, at the West Parry Sound Health Centre. Age 92 years.

Beloved Wife of the late Peter. Loving mother of Jennifer and Peter Jr. (Bianca). Dear Oma of Kyle (Jordan), Tori, and the late Zachary; Devan (Mily), Deanna (Evan), Peter John Jr “Johnny”, Nick (Chanelle), Emily, and Abigail. Loving Great Oma of Alyzabeth, Saydee, Skyler, Tyler, Ella and Matthew. Survived by her brothers and sisters, Helmy, Jan, Wim, Lenie, Nick, Joop, Peter, and Paul. Predeceased by her brothers and sisters, Christine, Bep, Leo, and Coby. Fondly remembered by her brother and sister in laws, nieces, nephews, other relatives/friends and her dearest friend Marg. Lovingly remembered by her sister-in-law Ria and family.

Mary was born in 1932 in The Hague, Holland. She immigrated to Canada in 1958 to be with her eldest sister, Christine during her first pregnancy. She met Peter soon after and was married in June of 1960. Mary and Peter wanted to start a family and bought a farm with greenhouses, then a flower shop and by 1975 they moved to Parry Sound for a quieter life, soon after, opening Obdam’s Flowers in 1976 that is still going strong. Mary had a true passion for the flower business and was always on site. She really never wanted to retire… but her legacy lives on through her daughter. If Mary wasn’t working, she was at her country home enjoying her many grandchildren, always willing to have them over for the night, the week, or even for the entire summer break. Mary was the second oldest and with 11 younger brothers and sisters, she spent her time helping her mother with the needs of them all. That’s where she must have developed her loving ways, kindness, patience, and generosity. She was so very proud of her entire family and always enjoyed any family gatherings, as there were many of them. She was a true hockey fan (Go Leafs Go!) and enjoyed playing cards, a good game of scrabble and all kinds of games with the kids. She was surrounded by so much love and support by her entire family. Her spirit will live on in our hearts forever. As our father passed on Remembrance Day last year, our mom joined him on what would have been their 64th wedding anniversary…together again. “Together Forever “ “Love You Forever”. She truly was a beautiful soul…. She was our family rock and we will miss her immensely.

Mary’s family would like to thank Dr. Ambraska and Nurse Ragen in Acute Care as well as Dr. Hamby and all the Palliative Care Nursing Staff at the West Part Sound Health Centre for their exceptional care and compassion. We will be forever grateful for your care of our mom and Oma.

A graveside service in celebration of Mary’s life will take place at Sylvan Acres Cemetery, on Tuesday June 25th at 2:00 P.M., followed by a gathering at Jennifer’s home.

As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, or charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Condolences

We are so very sorry to hear of the passing of Mary and send our most sincere condolences to Jen and family. I loved seeing Mary and Peter, hearing their stories of life in Holland and their love for children and community. I am happy for Mary that she is reunited with her love, Peter. Life must have been duller for her without him.
