JOHN CUNNINGHAM

It is with great sadness we share that John George Cunningham has passed away peacefully at the West Parry Sound Health Centre on Saturday, August 26th, 2023. Age 79 years.

Beloved husband of the late Mary Cunningham (Gregoire). Much loved Dad to Kim and her husband Gary Greer, and Blake. Cherished Papa to Jason and Nathan Greer. Dear brother to Joe Cunningham and his wife Sonja, and the late Jim Cunningham. John will be greatly missed by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends.

John was a kind and gentle man, with a terrific sense of humour and a huge smile, and great laugh to match. He worked as a butcher, and later Meat Manager, at Dominion Store and A&P, where he made many lifelong friends. Upon his retirement, he set up shop to look after the butchering for many hunters over the years.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the West Parry Sound Health Centre for their amazing care of John. Special thanks is given to John’s doctors, and to the wonderful nursing staff, especially Sherri, Kristine, Haley, Tara and Melissa for their outstanding care, compassion and guidance.

Please join the family to honour John at the Logan Funeral Home (705-746-5855), 81 James Street, Parry Sound, for visitation on Wednesday, August 30th from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M.

Funeral Mass in Celebration of John’s Life will take place at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 52 Church Street, on Thursday, August 31st at 10:00 A.M.

Interment Sylvan Acres Cemetery.

Reception to follow.

Donations in John's memory may be made to the West Parry Sound Health Centre, the Canadian Diabetes Association, or the charity of your choice.

To quote one of John's favorite sayings..... "From an old butcher, it’s been a real slice!"

My sympathy to all of John's Family. In life we often reflect on who is a good person and how did they contribute to the betterment of every day life. I think this represents a legacy such as what John brought literally to the households of so many from all walks of life. He was trusted respected by so many giving us all a better understanding and at times just a good laugh. I think I probably was about twelve when my Dad introduced me to the relevance of a good Butcher not just a cutter of meat but one who understood the needs of a Family. John Cunningham you will be missed

My sincere condolences to John's family on the passing of John. John was a very special and fondly remembered boss of mine. I enjoyed John's great sense of humour and kindness. He always was positive and friendly when we worked together and when I would drop by and say hi after I left Dominion. I still have the handwritten letter of reference John gave to me stating 'John would be an asset to any meat Department' Thoughtful words from a kind man. That is who John was. Best wishes to Kim and Blake and family during this difficult time.

My deepest sympathy to Kim, Blake, and the rest of the family. I have such fond memories of my days on North Church St - listening to The Smurfs record, eating toast with butter and honey, and playing Super Mario Brothers. The Cunninghams were wonderful caregivers; John, in particular, was such a gentle and kind soul. Sending all my love to the family.
