ELIZABETH ‘LIB’ HOWES

It is with great sadness that Libís family announces her death on August 4 2006 in Parry Sound the result of a cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 83. In many ways Lib was a woman ahead of her time. She grew up in Windsor and attended the University of Western Ontario graduating in 1945 with a BA in English Literature and engaged to the late John Malkin Howes a medical student at Western. They married in June 1945 and while John joined the war effort in Vancouver Lib went out to Washington State and got a MA in English Literature Their first child was born soon after and they moved to Parry Sound in early 1947 where John joined his uncle Eddy Malkinís medical practice. Five more children were born in Parry Sound (one died in infancy) and Lib stayed there until 1967. By then in her 40ís Lib moved to London Ontario to work on a PhD in English Literature. She decided to get a Masters in Library Science and worked very happily in the Journalism Library at UWO until she retired at the age of 65. Lib then returned to her beloved cottage near Rose Point and lived in perfect bliss for with her much loved cats for 18 years. Libís independent spirit will be greatly missed by her many friends - from the old days playing bridge the law library the Reform Party and many other connections. Those her knew her will not be surprised to learn that Lib did not want any of the usual funeral trappings. Instead her 5 children Malkin (Bryan) Braith (Sharon) Lissa (xDana) Briar (Doug) and Garth (Laurie) will host an Open House on Sunday August 13 2006 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Seniors Centre (Parry Sound Seguin Drop-In Centre) 80 James Street Parry Sound. If you wish to remember Lib instead of flowers or charitable donations open a bottle of wine and enjoy life. However donations to the local Humane Society or the University of Guelph Pet Trust are very welcome on her behalf.
